Program Details
What's the purpose?
First to Go is designed to help you build a strong foundation for your college journey. Through one-on-one mentoring, small group connections, and monthly community experiences, you'll receive support in developing key academic skills, learn how to navigate college resources, grow as an emerging leader, and feel more connected to our first-gen community.
What's the time commitment?
You'll meet with your mentor once a week for the duration of the spring semester (February-May), either in person or virtually. You'll also participate in biweekly pod meetings (your mentor + 3-5 mentees), with optional opportunities to connect during:
- Monthly "bring-to" events (attend campus events together)
- Monthly community meetups (space to connect and participate in activities that reinforce the program's key themes)
- Mentees will also participate in a Program Kickoff & Orientation and Closing Reception.
Peer Mentees
Looking for additional support as you navigate your first years at the U?
Student mentees are first- and second-year first-gen undergrads looking for support, mentorship, and community! Mentees are paired with experienced third-year+ first-gen peer mentors who understand the transition into college and are excited to help you settle in more, strengthen your footing, and thrive as you continue your journey at UMTC.
Peer Mentors
Peer Mentors are third-year+ first-gen students who are responsible, supportive, reflective, and excited to invest in their fellow first-gen peers! They play a vital role in helping early-year first-gen students settle in more, navigate the "hidden curriculum," strengthen their academic habits, get involved on campus, and build confidence as they continue their college journey. This is a paid position.
Please note: We aim to hire and recruit students who are not already connected to communities such as the University Honors Program, President's Emerging Scholars, TRIO SSS, etc.
